Washington Township has many fine examples of vernacular architecture, villages and hamlets representing life in the 19th century, and rural farms of scenic beauty. There are examples of early industrial life, such as lime kilns and grist mills. The expansion of the Township during the era of the Morris Canal is still visible in both the landscape and the small villages that grew along the canal. The industrial era of the early 1930s is also very visible in several Township structures. There is even some evidence of Native American settlements. A goal of the Historic Preservation Commission is to expand the base of properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the Township has four districts, one bridge and the Morris
Canal listed in the National Register. |
