GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

This program has been developed to temporarily help adults without dependent children living with them, in times of need.

If you believe you are eligible for help, please call the following numbers to fill out an application:

Monday and Friday                      at Liberty     1-4 PM     637-4579
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at Belvidere 1-4 PM     475-5331

You will need to make an appointment with Barbara Theis, Welfare Director at 453-2008 to complete the required paperwork.  Proof of identification, proof of citizenship and any doctor notes, pay receipts and/or correspondence from SSI or Unemployment is required.  Before applying for general assistance, you must apply for unemployment. If you are deemed able to work, you will be required to register with job services NJES in Phillipsburg where they will assign you to a work site where you will work off your grant.  The grant for employable people is $140.00 a month.  Failure to comply with this program, Work First New Jersey, will result in your sanction and closing of your case.

Part of the G.A. grant is a form of Medicaid which will cover your prescriptions and any service done in a doctors office. It will not cover any expense incurred at a hospital.  You must apply for Charity Care at the hospital of your choice.

Barbara Theis handles all aspects of running the program including issuing checks and is governed by a Local Assistance Board.  There are four meetings each year which are held at the Administration Building and are open to the public.
